Engineering excellence for carbon capture & storage

Northern Lights CCS project is gaining traction around the world

Big Energy park in Norway

The Northern Lights CCS project is a component of Longship, an enterprise of the Norwegian Government. The project is designed to develop an open and flexible infrastructure to transport CO2 from industrial emitters by ship to a receiving terminal in western Norway. There the CO2 is immediately stored for pipeline transfer to a geological reservoir 2,600 metres under the seabed.

This project ramps up the visibility and global importance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a scalable, economical and highly effective decarbonisation technology. It’s a critical technology that supports industrial-scale emitters to meet their emission reduction targets.

The Northern Lights CCS project aims to assist industrial emitters that are currently unable to avoid CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere. Additionally, the project aims to provide a safe and permanent storage option for CO2 that is removed from the air. It is the first of its kind that delivers storage of CO2 as a service.

The project is part of a growing global movement to actively manage the carbon cycle and get it back in balance.

With operations scheduled to begin in 2024, the facilities are currently under construction to enable Northern Lights to offer a safe and reliable shipping and storage service to industrial emitters all over Europe. As the project progresses, there is a great deal of interest within the European industrial sector, which sees the benefits of the technology and the fast track channel toward the emission reduction that it provides. As interest and demand expand, additional shipping and storage will be developed.

A key partner is CCB Energy that is building a green industrial park next to the Northern Lights facilities at the Energy Park in Øygarden municipality in Norway. The two companies have entered into a cooperation agreement to facilitate the development of infrastructure for handling and processing of local CO2 deliveries. This ensures that the CO2 will meet predefined specifications.

“This is significant from both a regional and national perspective. Through the collaboration with Northern Lights, we will facilitate the handling and delivery of captured CO2 where shipping is not considered an option. This agreement is an important starting point for corporations with the ambition to establish zero emission industrial production with CO2 capture locally at the Energy Park and for regional industrial emitters that will need access to a tailored solution for CO2 disposal.” ~ Ronny Haufe, Managing Director of CCB Energy

Northern Lights JV DA is a registered, incorporated General Partnership with Shared Liability (DA) owned equally by Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies. Without real world progress being made, projects such as Northern Lights industrial emitters are left with very few options and the impacts on global supply chains and the products they manufacture will have catastrophic consequences without decarbonisation solutions such as CCS.

Børre Jacobsen, Managing Director of Northern Lights said: “Northern Lights will store CO2 from industrial emitters in Norway and Europe. We also hope to receive volumes from regional emitters, industrial facilities established close to our terminal in Øygarden, including possibly direct air capture facilities. This is a cost-effective and good solution for all involved.”
